Advancing Delivery of Emergency Care in Honduras: Implementing a Triage System

Introduction: Overcrowding in the Emergency Room (ER) is a worldwide phenomenon affecting healthcare professionals' ability to apply life-saving interventions critically wounded and sick patients. Implementing routine triage system allows early recognition treatment of critical conditions such as polytrauma, difficulty breathing, shock, altered mental status. Furthermore, prioritization patients delivery timely care. We describe improvements patient care for ill through implementation Hospital Escuela (HE), 1306-bed, academic, tertiary hospital Honduras Method: Demographic data was recovered paper forms from January 2020 until December 2021. From 2022 June 2022, primarily digital forms. The consolidated, analyzed, interpreted using Microsoft Excel. Results: During thirty-month period, there were 161,848 consults, with 2.7% being patients, classified “red” according system. Most cases triaged yellow (53%), followed by green (23.6%), then orange (15.8%). Some (5%) did not assign classifications. One-third (33.4%) consults diverted ER Triage Urgent Care (SATU acronym Spanish). Trauma-related accounted 26.2% 3.6% overall weapon wounded. Conclusion: HE enhanced This has improved flow use clinical space diverting low-acuity SATU. Multi-disciplinary collaboration among professionals also need create centralized Resuscitation recognized.
